• The Mattachine Society is founded in Los Angeles, as the first major gay organization in the United States. The organization’s New York chapter would be founded later, in 1955, and become the largest gay rights group in the United States.^[1]

• The Daughters of Bilitis, for lesbians, is founded in San Francisco
• Frank Kameny is fired from his job as an astronomer in the United States Army's Map Service in Washington, D.C. because of his homosexuality. The event spurred Kameny into being a gay rights activist.
