James Alan Irvine (born 12 July 1958 in Glasgow, Scotland) is a former football player, now working as a manager.

Irvine became the Preston North End manager after signing a 3½ year deal on 20 November 2007 at the football club after vacating his assistant manager position at Everton.

As a player, Irvine played for Everton, Crystal Palace, Dundee United and Blackburn Rovers. In 1992, he was part of the Blackburn team that won promotion to the new Premier League, only to announce his retirement from playing just before the 1992–93 season began.

Irvine returned to Goodison Park eighteen years after leaving as a player to join the coaching staff. He was also formerly academy director at Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United, where he coached players such as Steven Taylor and Peter Ramage.

Irvine took over Preston North End in November 2007 with Preston in a relegation battle.[1] He guided Preston to a respectable 15th place in the 2007–08 season. In his first full season in charge, Irvine lead Preston to the playoffs when on a dramatic final day of the season, Preston clinched the final playoff spot thanks to goals from Jon Parkin and Sean St. Ledger. After that he was named the Coca-Cola Championship Manager of the Month for April. [2] Preston lost their play-off semi-final to Sheffield United 2-1 on aggregate.[3]
