Byzantine captivity
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term Byzantine captivity refers to a series of pontiffs with Eastern, or Byzantine, origins. This period stretches from Pope John V to Pope Zachary (685 till 752) when only one pontiff, Pope Gregory II, was not of "Eastern" extraction.[1]
