Live Art (art form)

Live Art is a term used to describe all acts of performance undertaken by an artist as a work of art. The term came into usage in the United Kingdom in the middle of the 1980s to recognize both new and existing performance based work (such as Happenings) as a form of creative expression that is not only independent of the traditional visual art forms, but also of theater and dance.

The Live Art Development Agency in London describes Live Art as follows:

"Live Art should not be understood as a description of an artform but as a strategy to ‘include' a diversity of practices and artists that might otherwise find themselves ‘excluded' from all kinds of policy and provision and all kinds of curatorial contexts and critical debates." LADA

Live Art can also be referred to as "time-based art", as the exploration of temporality is a key theme of recent performance based works.
