Sir Michael Nicholson Lord (born October 17, 1938, south Manchester) is a British politician, and Conservative Member of Parliament for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich since 1997. He is currently the Second Deputy Chairman of the House of Commons sometimes known as the Second Chairman of Ways and Means.

[edit] Early life
He attended William Hulme's Grammar School in Whalley Range, Manchester and Christ's College, Cambridge, where he gained an MA in agriculture in 1962. He was a councillor on Bedford Borough Council (known initially as North Bedfordshire Borough Council) from 1974-77 and on Bedfordshire County Council from 1981-3.
From 1962-6, he taught agriculture and was also a farmer. From 1966-8, he was a director of Power Line Maintenance Ltd. In 1968, he founded Lords Tree Services Ltd. From 1983, as well as being an MP, he was an arboricultural consultant. He is a former president of the Arboricultural Association.[1]
[edit] Parliamentary career
He contested Manchester Gorton in 1979. He was first elected to the earlier seat of Central Suffolk in 1983.
He has been a deputy Speaker of the House of Commons since 1997, and therefore does not take political stances or voting. Before his position, he was one of the Maastricht Rebels, and was seen as socially conservative, opposing homosexuality and advocating the return of capital punishment. He was bestowed a knighthood in 2001. Before entering Parliament he was an arboriculturalist.

He married Jennifer Margaret Childs in 1965 in Bedford, and they have a son and daughter.
