North South States Period (698 CE - 936 CE) refers to the period in Korean history when Silla and Balhae coexisted at the south and the north.[1][2] The north state was Balhae and the south state was Silla because the unification by Silla had been imperfect, only a small part of Goguryeo's land was unified by Silla; however Dae Jo-young from Sumo Mohe tribe, who is also a former Goguryeo general, established Jin (振, Zhen in Chinese, later called Balhae) after Goguryeo's capital and southern territories fell to Tang Dynasty and Unified Silla's alliance in 668 CE.
