[edit] Candidates
Currently, the electoral calendar is not established, and one cannot talk about official candidates. Still, the major parties have nominated their candidates. They are: the incumbent Traian Băsescu (formally independent, but sustained by PD-L), Mircea Geoană (PSD), Crin Antonescu (PNL), Corneliu Vadim Tudor (PRM),[2][3] and Hunor Kelemen (UDMR).[4] Also, on 9 April 2009, Radu, Prince of Hohenzollern-Veringen, husband of Princess Margarita of Romania announced his candidacy to the office of President[5]. Incumbent Traian Băsescu, when asked, has replied "I did not announce my candidacy", thus increasing speculations about him not running for a second term.
[edit] Opinion polls
A poll from May 2009 saw Băsescu lead with 31%, followed by Geoană at 24% and Antonescu with 20%. Prince Radu and Tudor followed with numbers in the single digits.[6]
