[edit] What is the difference
between an introduction and a preface? — $PЯINGεrαgђ 03:21, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
- Having had a quick look at the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (that's the 2 volume edition) I would be inclined to say that a preface is an introduction to a book or a speech. One particular use is the name of the prayer introducing the Consecration in the Catholic Mass.

- Best place to get an answer to this is the Book design page.

[edit] Question...
It mentions that an Introduction is sometimes called a prolegomenon. In the singular, this is also the root word for Prologue. The page Book design makes a distinction between an Introduction and a Prologue. Could someone provide a little more information on the "prolegomenon" usage; is this only in conjunction with essays, or is it used in books too? Is it current terminology, or a little dated?
