Upwardly Mobile was an Irish sitcom broadcast by RTÉ in the 1990s. It featured a skanger family who win the lottery and move in beside snooty neighbours. It starred Joe Savino in the male lead and Hilary Fannin in the female lead. Robbie Doolin, another actor in the show, was killed in 2000 in a cocaine sensitivity related incident. [1] The theme song originally went: "So it's goodbye to old J Arthur, and it's hello to fine Chablis", a reference to the upwardly mobile (hence the programme title) nature of the show. However, this was altered when RTÉ realised the sexual meaning hidden within - that the J Arthur featured in the song was not Guinness, but the movie mogul J. Arthur Rank, used as inappropriate rhyming slang. Upwardly Mobile was later named as one of the "Top 10 Worst Irish TV Programmes" by the Irish Independent. [2] The final episode was broadcast on 26 December 1997.[3]
