[edit] Audrey Mullender

In reply to your message, you are quite correct - she is not a faculty member of the University of Oxford, or indeed associated with it in any way. That was a mistake on my part, due to my lack of understanding of the nature of Ruskin College. Thank you for noticing and correcting it. Terraxos (talk) 16:55, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] DDs

Wrt DDs: I'd be interested, too, as I'm always curious when I come across an acronym I can't immediately decipher. A bit of Googling didn't turn up a likely answer, so I asked at the Reference desk. See Wikipedia:Reference desk/Language#DDs. Dorftrottel (ask) 20:46, April 30, 2008

[edit] Henry Chadwick

You may (or may not) rememebr that you once said that Henry Chadwick (theologian) badly needed work. Well, I've had a go, and I'm half thinking of putting it up for GA, so I' appreciate some fresh eyes on it before I kick that process off. David Underdown (talk) 14:03, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Thomas Adès

Hi, I'm afraid I don't know anything about the surname. All I remember is that there were different pronunciations going around (ADD-es, a-DES, even Addis!). And, alas I'm no longer in touch with people who might know. Sorry. Meanwhile I've brought the degree description in line with other articles such as Alain de Botton. Better? Yours Mattmm (talk) 19:45, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Lady Helen Taylor

I'm confused. What is "the more obvious way"? If there's an alternative, I'm quite happy to hear it, but my concern was that I don't think we can justify separate articles for her children purely on the basis that it makes the succession boxes look nicer. As for "Lady Helen Melons", I have no idea what you're talking about. I think you must be confusing me with someone else. Proteus (Talk) 11:39, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Ah, I see. That makes more sense! And I agree, it does rankle. As for the succession box, I also think that's a viable solution. I'm not particularly bothered by the exact format, as long as the required information is put across. Proteus (Talk) 13:41, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

[edit] Proposed deletion of Skylor Haagensen

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Skylor Haagensen, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. - CobaltBlueTony™ talk 03:21, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Degree awarding powers

Hi, I'm afraid I've no rigorous proof of this... though there was a reference to it in The Times recently... but then journalists are certainly fallible. The article mentioned that there were a few colleges that had been granted the power to award degrees (possibly through having their own Charter?) but never used these powers. However, with no hard proof I won't swear by it or place it any Wiki articles. Presumably you attended Oxford?

I am not sure of the validity of the "Registered Bodies" link - for example it lists Goldsmiths College, though this is a constituent college of the University of London that cannot award its own degrees.--Zoso Jade (talk) 22:59, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Nature of degree ceremonies

I've just seen your interesting note on my talk page comparing practices at SOAS and Oxford. To take your points in no particular order certainly it is also the case at Cambridge that the same degree cannot be conferred twice - for example if a student undertakes examinations for the degree of MPhil twice in two different subject then, on passing the second examination, he would be given a certificate by the Secretary of the University's Board of Graduate Studies certifying that he had passed the examination. He would not have the degree conferred on him again. The argument that being two identical degrees is conceptually silly is easier to make if the language of "admitted to the degree of ..." is used: if you are being admitted to a status within a university then how can you be admitted to it again? Cambridge, like Oxford, does not classify its degrees. It classifies the marks in examinations (so that, in Cambridge, you can have a different class in each Part of a Tripos examination).

So far as London is concerned, I believe that its governance arrangements has recently changed. But its current Statute 16 says that each college "shall be entitled to award degrees of the University, and (provided it has power to do so) may award its own degrees subject to any protocols that the Board of Trustees may establish." - so it sounds as only the college is needed to award a UoL degree now. But so far as your own case is concerned it looks to me as though you're entirely right. Savirr (talk) 13:58, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Lists of Oxford people

Hello again. I've been rather remiss at assisting you with the Oxford people lists, but have been concentrating on Jesus College lists. You may therefore find various new names awaiting you at List of alumni of Jesus College, Oxford and List of Principals and Fellows of Jesus College, Oxford. Regards, BencherliteTalk 07:19, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Anglican Bishops

I always put that they are a stub, and when I go back to them I very often find someone has improved the article in some way: that is the nature of Wikipedia. Bashereyre (talk) 16:15, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Italics

I guess if I have any thinking at all it is that there would not be enough material to write an article, but nevertheless it may have something available - either on-line, or from a reference library. I am not sure when you started editing, but the site went through a period when quite unbelievable articles were getting deleted and I guess I saw little point in putting things in red. Personally I would love to see articles on Anglican Training Colleges and other institutions related to the key figures in the Church's history. Bashereyre (talk) 07:01, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Derek Prince

I take your points about his Oxford days, all the info comes from Stephen Mansfield's biography. Mansfield's American and an expert on Pentecostalism rather than on Oxford, so perhaps he slipped up on some details. Please amend as you see fit.R Bartholomew (talk) 12:31, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] An article you created maybe deleted soon: Tools which can help you

The article you created: Aloysius (Waugh) may be deleted from Wikipedia.

There is an ongoing debate about whether your article should be deleted here:

The faster you respond on this page, the better chance the article you created can be saved.

Finding sources which mention the topic of your article is the very best way to avoid an article being deleted {{Findsources3}}:

Find sources for Aloysius (Waugh): google news recent, google news old, google books, google scholar, NYT recent, NYT old, a9, msbooks, msacademic ...You can then cite these results in the Article for deletion discussion.

Also, there are several tools and helpful editors on Wikipedia who can help you:

1. List the page on Article Rescue Squadron. You can get help listing your page on the Article Rescue Squadron talk page.
2. At any time, you can ask any administrator to move your article to a special page. (Called userfication)
3. You can request a mentor to help you: Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User. But don't wait for a mentor to respond to you before responding on the article for deletion page.
4. When trying to delete a page, veteran editors love to use a lot of rule acronyms. These acronyms don't need to intimidate you. Here is a list of acronyms you can use yourself: Deletion debate acronyms, which will help you argue that the article should be kept.

If your page is deleted, you also have many options available. Good luck! Ikip (talk) 21:08, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] John Tosh

You are quite right of course, the trouble is I do not know which route to his degrees John Tosh took. I merely repeated the bald information contained about his degrees on his staff profile page at Roehampton. What is in the Wikipedia article about him is therefore factually accurate. I agree it might be a better if the details about incoporation etc. could be made explicit. I do not have that information however and short of writing to Prof. Tosh and asking, I am not sure how we could go about finding out. --Graham Lippiatt (talk) 18:02, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Italics

Thank you Oxonian 2006, I shall avoid the italics: sorry I had forgotten. As to people's full names, I don't mind if other people redirect my articles. It's still the best site on the internet Bashereyre (talk) 19:27, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Rhianna Pratchett

Apologies, you're right; I misread the list. I'll correct my comment. (I still think the article should be kept, though.) Robofish (talk) 01:17, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Dr Nossiter

Yes Oxonian2006, I may well have got a few things wrong. I looked for the original article I used (LSE Alumni publication) but could not find it. I guess you did not know him but he was a wonderful man. How he would have loved the current political crisis. I cannot say I was surprised he did not make particularly old bones: I have never seen anyone smoke quite so much as he did. Bashereyre (talk) 19:00, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Privy Councillors

Sorry ... I did think that everybody was appointed to the Privy Council .... Like they do it in places like Canada. I thought that you had changed the articles where it was needed.

Again sorry if I upset you
