Welcome to the assessment department of WikiProject Television. This department focuses on assessing the quality of Wikipedia's television articles. While much of the work is done in conjunction with the WP:1.0 program, the article ratings are also used within the project itself to aid in recognizing excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work.
The ratings are done in a distributed fashion through parameters in the {{TelevisionWikiProject}} project banner; this causes the articles to be placed in the appropriate sub-categories of Category:Television articles by quality and Category:Television articles by importance, which serves as the foundation for an automatically generated worklist (Index · Statistics · Log).

[edit] Frequently asked questions
- How can I get my article rated?
- Please list it in the section for assessment requests below.
- Who can assess articles?
- Any member of the Television WikiProject is free to add or change the rating of an article.
- Why didn't the reviewer leave any comments?
- Unfortunately, due to the volume of articles that need to be assessed, we are unable to leave detailed comments in most cases. If you have particular questions, you might ask the person who assessed the article; they will usually be happy to provide you with their reasoning.
- What if I don't agree with a rating?
- You can list it in the section for assessment requests below, and someone will take a look at it. Alternately, you can ask any member of the project to rate the article again.
- Aren't the ratings subjective?
- Yes, they are, but it's the best system we've been able to devise; if you have a better idea, please don't hesitate to let us know!
If you have any other questions not listed here, please feel free to ask them on the discussion page for this department.
[edit] Instructions
An article's assessment is generated from the class parameter in the {{TelevisionWikiProject}} project banner on its talk page:
{{TelevisionWikiProject
| class=
| importance=
| type=
}}
The following values may be used for the class parameter:
- FA (adds articles to Category:FA-Class television articles)
- FL (adds articles to Category:FL-Class television articles)
- A (adds articles to Category:A-Class television articles)
- GA (adds articles to Category:GA-Class television articles)
- B (adds articles to Category:B-Class television articles)
- Start (adds articles to Category:Start-Class television articles)
- Stub (adds articles to Category:Stub-Class television articles)
- List (adds articles to Category:List-Class television articles)
- NA (for pages, such as templates or disambiguation pages, where assessment is unnecessary; adds pages to Category:Non-article television pages)
Use the type parameter to add any of the following classifications:
- Dab (adds articles to Category:Disambig-Class television articles)
- Template (adds templates to Category:WikiProject Television templates)
- Cat (adds categories to Category:WikiProject Television categories)
- List (adds lists to Category:List-Class television articles)
Articles for which a valid class is not provided are listed in Category:Unassessed television articles. The class should be assigned according to the quality scale below.
[edit] Quality scale
| Class | Criteria | Reader's experience | Editing suggestions | Example | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
The article has attained featured article status.
|
Professional, outstanding, and thorough; a definitive source for encyclopedic information. | No further content additions should be necessary unless new information becomes available; further improvements to the prose quality are often possible. | Tourette Syndrome (as of March 2009) |
|||
The article has attained featured list status.
|
Professional standard; it comprehensively covers the defined scope, usually providing a complete set of items, and has annotations that provide useful and appropriate information about those items. | No further content additions should be necessary unless new information becomes available. | Avatar: The Last Airbender (season 3) (as of February 2009) |
|||
The article is well organized and essentially complete, having been reviewed by impartial reviewers from a WikiProject or elsewhere. Good article status is not a requirement for A-Class.
|
Very useful to readers. A fairly complete treatment of the subject. A non-expert in the subject matter would typically find nothing wanting. | Expert knowledge may be needed to tweak the article, and style issues may need addressing. Peer-review may help. | Batman (1989 film) (as of October 2008) |
|||
The article has attained good article status.
|
Useful to nearly all readers, with no obvious problems; approaching (although not equalling) the quality of a professional encyclopedia. | Some editing by subject and style experts is helpful; comparison with an existing featured article on a similar topic may highlight areas where content is weak or missing. | Usain Bolt (as of May 2009) |
|||
| B | The article is mostly complete and without major issues, but requires some further work to reach good article standards.
|
Readers are not left wanting, although the content may not be complete enough to satisfy a serious student or researcher. | A few aspects of content and style need to be addressed, and expert knowledge is increasingly needed. The inclusion of supporting materials should also be considered if practical, and the article checked for general compliance with the manual of style and related style guidelines. | Jammu and Kashmir (as of September 2007) |
||
| C | The article is substantial, but is still missing important content or contains a lot of irrelevant material. The article should have some references to reliable sources, but may still have significant issues or require substantial cleanup.
|
Useful to a casual reader, but would not provide a complete picture for even a moderately detailed study. | Considerable editing is needed to close gaps in content and address cleanup issues. | Exeter Cathedral (as of June 2008) |
||
| Start | An article that is developing, but which is quite incomplete and, most notably, lacks adequate reliable sources.
|
Provides some meaningful content, but the majority of readers will need more. | Provision of references to reliable sources should be prioritised; the article will also need substantial improvements in content and organisation. | Real analysis (as of November 2006) |
||
| Stub | A very basic description of the topic.
|
Provides very little meaningful content; may be little more than a dictionary definition. | Any editing or additional material can be helpful. The provision of meaningful content should be a priority. | Cuthwine (as of August 2008) |
||
| List | Meets the criteria of a stand-alone list, which is an article that contains primarily a list, usually consisting of links to articles in a particular subject area. | There is no set format for a list, but its organization should be logical and useful to the reader. | Lists should be lists of live links to Wikipedia articles, appropriately named and organized. | List of aikidoka (as of June 2007) |
[edit] Importance
Don't worry too much about assessing for Importance. It's helpful to have the most vital television articles tagged as Top importance so they can be easily identified as the highest priority, but less influential television articles don't really need to be tagged for importance.
[edit] Article importance grading scheme
| Status | Template | Meaning of Status |
|---|---|---|
| Top | {{Top-Class}} | This article is of the utmost importance to this project, as it forms the basis of all information. |
| High | {{High-Class}} | This article is fairly important to this project, as it covers a general area of knowledge. |
| Mid | {{Mid-Class}} | This article is relatively important to this project, as it fills in some more specific knowledge of certain areas. |
| Low | {{Low-Class}} | This article is of little importance to this project, but it covers a highly specific area of knowledge or an obscure piece of trivia. |
| None | None | This article is of unknown importance to this project. It remains to be analyzed. |
[edit] Requesting an assessment
If you have made significant changes to an article and would like an outside opinion on a new rating for it, please feel free to list it below. Please add new entries to the bottom of the list and sign with four tildes (~~~~).
- "Close to Home (UK TV series)" I have created this article, and would greatly appreciate your assessment and edits. Many thanks for anything you are able to add! Nickgp76 (talk) 16:39, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- Deal or No Deal (US game show) - Significant improvements and valuable contributions have been made on this article since the last assessment. A new assessment is greatly appreciated. S3884h (talk) 18:28, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm, hard to choose. I'd say... assessed as C, just based on it being fairly well-written. It DEFINITELY needs an episode split, and it's lacking sources in crucial areas. You're on the right track, though. - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Now, he can figure out the length of things easily. 20:50, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
- Deal or No Deal Models (US) - This is a first time request. Significant improvements were made to the overall article to give it a more professional look. S3884h (talk) 18:28, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
- Assessed as Start. Lacks references, and without any assertion of notability (such as reception to one, some, or all of the girls), a lot of the information seems trivial. - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Now, he can figure out the length of things easily. 20:33, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
- I Love Money - I need an assesment of both quality and importance. Previously it was Start and High, but someone changed it to GA and TOP without discussion or anything. I will revert to Start and High, I am basically asking for an assesment of importance, because I do not feel it is HIGH priority.<3 Tinkleheimer TALK!! 01:33, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
- Boy Meets World - Quality and importance -- many recent updates and revisions.Danceinthestreets (talk) 02:01, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Assessment completed and set to Start by another editor -- Collectonian (talk · contribs) 04:05, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
- Ross Kemp in Afghanistan - Request for reassessment. This article really has come a long way since i last asked for an assessment. Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk | Sign 23:26, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
- Code Monkeys - Request for assessment. There have many changes to this article and should need one. --GamerPro64 (talk) 21:21, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
- Assessed as Start. Deals far too much in characters and the content of the episodes, and much of it lacks references. Good start, however. - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Now, he can figure out the length of things easily. 08:54, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
- Flashpoint (TV series) - Expanded. Lots of citations. Ominae (talk) 07:38, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
- The Brittas Empire-Plenty of detail and re-writes taken place, quote from critics also added along with more references. Edito*Magica (talk) 19:26, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- Assessment completed, and set to Start. Almost no references with inappropriate use of "general" references for a series article. Has no real reception and missing other basic core sections. Fails to comply with even the general MoS regarding headers and basic article format. See WP:MOSTV for additional guideance on what other sections would be useful. -- Collectonian (talk · contribs) 04:05, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
- 2point4 children- Further detail and images added. Edito*Magica (talk) 19:26, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- Assessment completed, and remains at Start.
- Canned Film Festival - Request for initial assessment. I've been working on this article for over a year now, and have added about as much as I could. It's hard to find information due to the show's age and obscurity, and am pretty sure that it's of little to no importance on the rating scale. However, I wanted to make sure it didn't disappear into oblivion. Doc cromwell (talk) 04:12, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
- Assessment completed. Assessed to C. Far too much unreferenced to be B, also failing to comply with basic Wikipedia MoS. Lacking basic core information, such as reception, information See WP:MOSTV for additional guideance on what other sections would be useful. -- Collectonian (talk · contribs) 04:05, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
- Children in Need 2008 has been heavily updated during it's broadcast and is now no longer a stub Pedgeth (talk) 02:10, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
- The Sun Military Awards - New article requiring first assessment Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk | Sign 12:10, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
- Bonanza- Has not been rated. IndulgentReader (talk) 05:38, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- King of the Hill Not been rated yet. Eoghan1234 (talk) 21:55, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
- Assessment completed. Assessed to C. The complete lack of a reception section, and other core series sections for such a well covered series is disappointing. Also low on references with a few of questionable reliability. See WP:MOSTV for additional guideance on what other sections would be useful. -- Collectonian (talk · contribs) 04:05, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
- The L Word - rated B-class on WikiProject LGBT, not rated on WikiProject Television. Has been updated and needs reassessment on TV-article related matters. --TLW (talk) 02:49, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
-
- Assessed to C class. Fails B class requirements for referencing, MoS compliance (both main MoS and WP:MOSTV, and not enough information on core topics (like production).
- Beverly Hills, 90210 franchise -- I'd appreciate the time. Thanks. -- James26 (talk) 21:01, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
-
- Already assessed to C by another editor. Agree with this assessment. Fails too many B criteria to go higher, but certainly above a Start. -- Collectonian (talk · contribs) 04:01, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
- Harper's Island --Has not been analyzed yet. We would really appreciate your time and energy. Gqpolitico (talk)gqpolitico
-
- Assessment complete. Assessed to Start. Has some basic content, with the short synopsis, and short development section, but death chart isn't valid content, nor are the crew and international broadcast sections. Also appears to be using some unreliable sources and WP:EL section is in serious need of spam clean out. -- Collectonian (talk · contribs) 04:01, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
- Southland (TV series) - Has not been assessed yet. Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk | Sign 18:54, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
-
- Assessment complete. Assessed to Start. No real content beyond the tables, and the episode list. -- Collectonian (talk · contribs) 04:01, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
- Dollhouse (TV series) - Rated as Start class currently, and it does have some issues (for instance, an episode list of some sort as well as more coverage of the unique circumstances surrounding the series' renewal, would both be appreciated), however, it also contains more information and more citations (50+, not counting direct citations to individual episodes) than you'd expect from Start class article. Wouldn't this be closer to a C, possibly B class? 70.118.24.50 (talk) 03:26, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
-
- Assessment complete. Ressassed to C. Fails the B criteria #1 for referencing (still has unreferenced portions, and several of the references do not appear to be WP:RS), it fails criteria 3 in that it has quite a few structural issues and doesn't meet WP:MOSTV nor the basic Wikipedia MoS (including inconsistent reference formatting and excessive use of tables that aren't necessary). The cast picture also goes against WP:NONFREE. It also fails criteria B4, as it needs some serious copyediting. As a whole, applying WP:SUMMARY to the cast section would be good, and needs a general overall clean up, but it seems to be going in a good direction.-- Collectonian (talk · contribs) 03:39, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
- "Bewitched" - Currently rated as start class, the article has gone through major changes since, including recently significant improvements by two authors, including restructuring, references, removal of irrelevant information and redundancies, and rewrite of content for encyclopedic style and consistent language. Suggestions welcome, but I believe it is well past the "start" status. -Njsustain (talk) 10:22, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
- White Collar (TV series) - I started this article for the upcoming show earlier today using most information available. It should be in no danger of being deleted, since it is definitely in production. I'm afraid, however, that it is merely a Start-Class, and would like to request a rating and help on expanding it. Kevinbrogers (talk) 04:45, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
- Kelly Taylor (90210) -- Much appreciated whenever anyone finds the time. -- James26 (talk) 09:33, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
